Trout Lake, Itasca County (all postings)

Fished Monday night from 8 pm till about 3:30 am. Fishing was pretty slow comPared to the past several trips there. Started in 30-35' of water and worked our way in to the tops of several rock humps that top out at about 4-6'. Pulling lindy rigs with leeches and crawlers seemed to just get the littler smallys to bite , without any walleyes. Bottom bouncer with a crawler harness boated 2 really nice smallys right on top of a hump in about 6'. Once we tied crankbaits on we fished no deeper than 10-12' off the edges of weeds in several spots and finally ended up with 3 nice Eyes all of which were to big to keep. We both had different color cranks on but 2 of them were caught on perch colored rapala x raps . Biggest being 22-1/2. Lonnggggggg night!

I was surprised not to find Trout Lake by Coleraine listed among the fishing reports. This is a real gem of a lake located just off HWY 169 in Coleraine. It's a clear, deep body of water that has a reputation for putting out huge walleyes. Got a chance to spend a rainy half day out there, and it was a little bit of a struggle. Usually this time of year the fish are located on the lakes rock bars and humps, but today they seemed to be using more shoreline related structure that had rock and weeds mixed. Crawlers were by far the best today on a rig, or small jig head. Northlands Fire Ball, 1/8th ounce in watermellon was pretty much all you needed. Trout for me isn't usually a big numbers lake for eaters, but has some real potential for a fish of a lifetime.
