12/26/16: We fished out of Mac's Twin Bay. The condition was the worst by far this season. Wind gust of 25 mph on shore, 2 inches of water on top of the ice, Within half day, the water froze already. Ice was 11 inches, and there's no snow, so bring cleats. There's no snow to bank any ice houses. We fished out on a 20 fow flat sand bottom. We seen lots of fish, but it was difficult to get them to bite. The wind was brutal and the water just made the day suck. I'll probably head out there and try one more time before all the permanent ice houses are placed.
Hello, Thinking to take a 7 hour drive from Illinois to fish Mille Lacs for the 1st time in about 3 weeks, my guess ice should be plenty safe by then. I am planning to take ATV with me so I can hit the spots for a good catch. I would appreciate ,if someone could shed some light for the 1st timer. How far out should I go out on the lake with ATV? Is there a popular spot everybody is launching from on the lake with a parking present? I am interested in Walley and Northern Pike. Lastly, my ATV is registered in Wisconsin, I assume I don't need registration in Minnesota in this case, anyone can confirm? If so , do I still need a non-resident trail pass to take it out on frozen waterways?
Ahead of time I do appreciate the help.

Crybaby, I hear your pain. Mille Lacs was once my favorite lake, I had a trailer at a resort there for 15 years or more. Unfortunately our Governor Goofy seems to like to stick his nose in places that he really has no idea what he is talking about. He has done that time and again. I hate to talk politics, but this is what this lake has. Omega down to.
Craps11, Mille Lacs has some tight walleye regs right now. In fact you cannot keep any walleyes, and they are shutting down the lake for walleye fishing in 2 weeks. You can keep small mouth bass, not sure how many, 6 or 10. The lake is kind of a mess right now. If you have options, I would consider going elsewhere.
Used to fish Minn. a lot 25 yrs. ago, haven't been back for some time. Driving up to Mill Lacs next weekend. Sounds like there are some very tight rules regarding fish that can be taken. Staying at McQuaids Resort/hotel. What can I expect to encounter, as to laws & rules?

Drove to Mille Lacs for a few hours of Trolling last week. Late to the report. Anyhow, trolled the mud flats and deep water between the flats. Was pulling lead core letting out 5-6 colors depending where I was. Caught 4 Walleyes, one was so small that I wasn't even sure if he was there or not. Caugh one on a shad rap, two on a Hornet, and one on a new bait to be coming out in the spring. I tell you though it was more of a stick bait than a shad style bait.

Hit the big pon Saturday afternoon, had some new sample baits I wanted to pull and see how the run. To my buddy, the baits ran straight, they dove to the expected depth, and htey even caught fish. I trolled the edges of the mud flats, and the deep water in never never land. Caught 3 walleyes, so I can't say it was an overly productive day. As I said, Iw as just out to see how the new baits ran.
