The fisha re still biting on Mille Lacs.  Ran up there yesterday just to catch the evening bite.  Got on the lake at 3:00, ran out to my favorite Ice Spot, set up camp and proceeded to catch fish.  I had 3 fish in the first 5 minutes.  Going to be a good bite I thought.  Stayed till 6:00a, caught maybe 20 fish, I was all alone, took a few selfies that just didn't turn out right.  Same program, a Shiner under a cork, and a fathead head on a gold jigging spoon.

Spent the day on Mille Lacs.  Bounced around a couple of spots during the mornign and early afternoon without much to show for it.  About 2:00 PM, I moved to one of my favorite rock humps for the evening bite.  The hump tops out at about 18',a dn is surrounded by 26'.  I know lots of these spots out there, this just happens to be one of my favorites.  Abotu 4:00 PM, the light switch turned on.  From 4:00 - 6:00 we caught maybe 35 Walleyes, from 14"-25" being the biggest. The bite started by fish hitting our dead sticks, but as the bite continued, they wanted our Gold Spoons wtih a minnow head held still up to 2' off the bottom.  Below is my buddy's 25" fish.  Was pretty cool, we couldn't get her turned up the hole, and we watched her swim around the hole just under the ice through the clear ice.

12/26/16: We fished out of Mac's Twin Bay. The condition was the worst by far this season. Wind gust of 25 mph on shore, 2 inches of water on top of the ice, Within half day, the water froze already. Ice was 11 inches, and there's no snow, so bring cleats. There's no snow to bank any ice houses. We fished out on a 20 fow flat sand bottom. We seen lots of fish, but it was difficult to get them to bite. The wind was brutal and the water just made the day suck. I'll probably head out there and try one more time before all the permanent ice houses are placed.

Hello, Thinking to take a 7 hour drive from Illinois to fish Mille Lacs for the 1st time in about 3 weeks, my guess ice should be plenty safe by then. I am planning to take ATV with me so I can hit the spots for a good catch. I would appreciate ,if someone could shed some light for the 1st timer. How far out should I go out on the lake with ATV? Is there a popular spot everybody is launching from on the lake with a parking present? I am interested in Walley and Northern Pike.  Lastly, my ATV is registered in Wisconsin, I assume I don't need registration in Minnesota in this case, anyone can confirm? If so , do I still need a non-resident trail pass to take it out on frozen waterways?

Ahead of time I do appreciate the help.

Thank You,

Andrew
