The river mouth is very narrow and constantly moving. If you start out and get grounded and there is any kind of surf, it could be very difficult. I would motor from Ontonagon.

Fished the mouth of the Ontonagon River to about a mile out, varying depths from 20fow to 90 fow. Kept spoons on the bottom for lakers with a few spoons 20ft down for salmon. Ended up with 4 Lakers, the biggest being 7lbs and 3 salmon, the biggest being 10lbs. All with spoons on downriggers.

Late report but we got a few coho, laker and brown trolling cranks on boards in 10- 24 fow outside of the Ontonagon River over Memerial Day weekend. Saw lots of fish stacked up in the river on hte depthfinder but foolishly didn't take the time to work them (whiners in the boat.) Guys were getting waldos trolling in the river but we didn't try it. Did get some small smallies and a small burbot upstream on jig/minnows one evening. Hopefuly will get back up soon.
