FISHING REPORT
5/16/13 3:16 PM CST
Lake Gogebic opener was great! Anglers battled high winds most of the day but had sunshine and mild temps. Most fished jigs and minnows or trolled crank baits near shore with good success. Limits of fish 16 to 21 inches was common, and most were milkers. Others drifted and trolled the main lake reporting success as well even some on crawlers. Anglers can expect good fishing and continued nice weather for the weekend. Be safe and good luck. Barry (Bear) Drews at Bear`s Nine Pines Resort 906-842-3361

My buddy and I fished 2 different lakes around the lake Gogebic area today. The first lake the fish were still spawning. We caught 8 between 16 and 24 inches right where the river came into the lake innthe first hour we were fishing, we launched at 230am and started catching right away. We hit a lull around 6am and couldn't get a bite so moved lakes and picked up 2 22 inch males that were gorging on perch fry. They were stuffed full of food. Those fish came from a rocky humpy area. Overall a great opener we got our 10 by 1030am and released 15 undersized fish. All on jig and minnow except for one random pig on a crawler and slip bobber.

Lake Gogebic opener is on wed. May 15th. Main lake is clear of ice with some ice hanging up in several bays. Anglers may plan on some difficulty at several landings as wind has pushed some ice chunks into shore and may change with wind direction. Also high water levels has many landings with docks put on hold until water levels go down some. Some landings may require use of hip boots to unload your boat without a dock in place. Be cautious on the water for floating debris and ice chunks if wind direction bumps them loose. Please check locally at what ever area of the lake you plan to launch at. Best of luck! Lake Gogebic update. Despite snow once again last night the northwest winds completed the job of clearing ice off the lake! A slow warm up is forecast with opening day weather in the 60`s. See you then! Barry (Bear) Drews at Bear`s Nine Pines Resort 906-842-3361

Lake Gogebic update. Anxious anglers will be happy to see current conditions as of 5pm Fri. 5-10-13 there is about 1 mile of open water at the inlet and most shorelines are free. Colder temps predicted for the weekend with warmer weather returning by mon.- tue. 20 to 30 mile per hour wind gusts are possible sat. evening which will help. Remember lake ice will shift around, so current open areas may change by the day! Hope to have a more favorable report for you before the opener on wed. Think spring!!!

Lake Gogebic has a lot of ice on it yet, but many shorelines are becoming hard to access. Anglers over the weekend had great travel and nice weather along with some nice perch. The main lake ice had two layers with a hollow pocket in between due to all the slush we had this winter. The top layer has softened which will cause travel to be difficult. Travel on the ice is NOT recommended!!!! Time to think spring! Lets hope weather conditions will get the ice off before the May 15th opener! Lake Gogebic fishing was slower over the weekend, heavy winter weather was a factor and angler activity has been slow since. Current ice conditions are good with more wet slushy snow on top. Expect approx. 3 to 6 inches of slush as the snow has settled down quickly. Use caution near snow covered shorelines that may be unsafe! Anglers are using both snowmobile and atv`s. Surface and ice conditions can change quickly, weekend forecast is for a warm up to 50 plus temps which can change travel conditions fast! Reports are on angler activity and are not a guarantee of ice safety. Please use caution, check locally, and be safe! Barry (Bear) Drews at Bear`s Nine Pines Resort 906-842-3361

Any recommendations on general areas/mudflats to find the perch now? North, South, East, West?

What areas do the perch spawn? Just wondering because they should be staging closer to these areas?

Any help would be appreciated.

Feel free to PM me.

Thanks

Lake Gogebic report has not changed. Perch action has been good using wigglers over the mud from 20 to 30ft. Lake conditions and travel are good as well, expect 12 to 14 inches of ice with a few inches of slush on top. More snow is in the forecast for the weekend, but do not expect it to effect travel. Reminder of safety at this time of year!! Caution near shorelines and any inlets to the lake as ice conditions can change quickly. Please check locally before going out. These reports are of local activity and do not guarantee safety. Best of luck and enjoy ! Barry (Bear) Drews at Bear`s Nine Pines Resort 906-842-3361
