FISHING REPORT
2/25/14 11:47 AM CST
Ice Depth: 14" Conditions: Sunny Air Temp: 16° - 20° F Water Temp: Below 40° F
Went Sunday late morning until early afternoon. First went to North Unit but it was closed due to flooding. Went to South Unit, old Ponderosa Club. Fishing was slow, moved and drilled a lot and just a few small gills and perch. The ice was OK but not what I expected. There was three inches of solid ice on top of 12" to 15" ice soft honey combed crap under it. If we don't get much snow it should solidify a little. If you go be careful. I was walking past the end of an island, stepped into about 8" of snow and went knee deep through 1/4" of ice. I'm glad it was only about two feet deep.

Hi Shorebound They have been stocking Redears out there for years. They get big so those are really getting popular all over Illinois. Southern Illinois seems to really be stocking them pretty heavily to. I`m hoping to get out to Mazonia tomorrow to hit as you said some ares I could`t get to for a few years due to no ice. Hope to meet you out there some day to compare notes. Best of luck Smile

FISHING REPORT

Ice Depth: 16" Conditions: Partly Sunny Air Temp: 36° - 40° F Water Temp: Below 40° F
Fished Sunday the 19th. Got back to some areas we haven't been able to get to the last several years. Drilled a lot of holes the first 1.5 hours with nothing and was going to leave. Decided to try one more bay and glad I did. Caught some gills from 4" to 9" and LM bass from 9" to 14" and a lot of both. I was surprised to catch several red ears. They ranged from 7" to 9". I don't know if they have been stocked by the State or are naturally occuring from cross breeding. Either way, it great.

Wondering if anyone has been out to Mazonia? What's the water temp? Wondering if the crappie are hitting yet?

Hit Mazonia this afternoon. Tried Pondo Lake. Rough trip. Got a couple big gills, an 11 in Black Crappie, and a 10 in Redear Sunfish. Released them all as they were full of eggs. Also got 8 small bass. Saw one old dam fool run with his motor all out. Guy yelled at him and he stopped and looked at him and went a bit farther and was back at it. How dam stupid are these people? I guess as long as our DNR sits in their field office these jerks do what they want. Thats just Illinois for you. Good luck to all

Hit the canels on Saturday. Wow what a nice day. Fished the edge for crappie. Hit 9 keepers and 5 largemouth. Also left a nightcrawler drifting fro cats. No cats but picked up the largest crappie of the day on the crawler. Fished slip bobbers at 18" right in the grass.

Ice Depth: 2" Conditions: Partly Sunny Air Temp: 26° - 30° F
Called the closest bait shop to Mazonia this morning. They told me ice was safe on all the lakes so I went around 11am. Don`t EVER believe em. Found a lake in the north with 5 cars so we gave it a go. We have done well there in other years. We followed their tracks onto the ice. Got out a ways and it didnt look good. Asked the guys how thick the ice was. He said 2 inches. They tried to go back farther to their normal spot but got into only 1 inch of ice. How dam stupid are these people. They are on only 2in of ice. We got out of there quick. On the way back saw where one of their footprints was melted through already. Baitshop was so desperate to sell 4.00 worth of bait they lied and might send someone to a cold death. PLEASE BE CAREFULL! ITS NOT SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fished Monster lake yesterday from 3:00 to 7:00. Really dead. Got 6 small Bass. Biggest was 13 in and rest were barely 10. Got em on crank baits. Son got 2 bluegills on a roostertail. I noticed alot of gars rolling on minnows. We really need cooler temps to get the fish going again. I stopped on the way out through the north and talked to a guy who fished all afternoon with similiar results. Just plain slow. Will try again in September Sad

FISHING REPORT

Conditions: Sunny Air Temp: 86° - 90° F Water Temp: Above 80° F
Mazonia has really turned off. Watertemps are way up and the water level has really dropped. Tried a couple different lakes yesterday and it was really slow. Fished 4 hrs and only got 6 bass from 10 to 13 inches. Right at dusk son got a 17 incher. Really did not even see bluegills taking bugs off surface. Saw 2 gars about 3 ft long lounging on the surface. We need rain and much cooler temps to get fish feeding again. Cool

Fished Monster from 130 to 7Pm. Very hot and complete sunshine. Fishing was very slow. Kept 15 real nice bluegills for dinner tomorrow. Threw back about 20 gills. Released 14 bass thar ranged from 10 to 14.5inches. Also got a cat about 18 inches. My son caught a 24 inch cat on a roostertail and ultra light rod. He had a blast. Both cats were released. For a tough day we had a great time. Fishing is our passion for sure. Good luck to all. Cool
