The Bergmstr,

I feel your pain, Used to love fishing mazonia! Last 5-8 years have been horrible for ice fishing.. As I posted last year and you can read it further down the page, It sucks when the DNR tells you to keep praying cuz theres no more fish left in the lakes! REALLY? cmon man, atleast let me HOPE lol.. On a side note though, I see you did well on a smaller lake! Wont ask, dont need to but I will tell you that theres lots of small pits on both the north and south units that are not stocked by conservation but they DO hold great panfish! Im talking pond size like 0.5 acres! Hard to access but If you get on them, the rewards can be plentiful.. Such as what you were talking about! About 4 years ago I caught a 15.75" black crappie in a small pond and also another one at 13.25" in a day, sheer luck, figured why not, wasted a whole day on the larger lakes.. The pond which the crappies came from were in the back of the north unit and had to really cut through some brush to get to it.. Hope you keep finding them gems Tounge Out

GL out there!

Went out Sat. with my son. Started at some small lake I don`t even know the name of. Fished 7 to 9 and got 7 keeper bluegills. 3 were really big. Threw back at least 24 dinks. Then we hit clear lake in the north. Very slow. Fished an hour and added one more keeper. Son wanted to go home so I took him and headed for a local lake to finish the day.

Fished Pondo last Sunday from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Fished from 7 feet to 28 feet and cut 12 holes. Tried bass minnows on tipup=Nothing. Tried jigging=Not even 1 bite. Marked some fish in the 28 foot spot right on the bottom, but could not get them to bite. When i was leaving to watch the Bears game, 2 other guys were leaving and fished in 32 feet and marked fish up and on bottom, but same results. One guy said he tried every color and a few bumps but no fish. I told them thanks for the info and felt a little better leaving with a SKUNK. Crying Hope you do better. Good luck and post if you can.

Just wondering if anybody has been out on Mazonia yet this year. I'm probably going to head to Ponderosa this weekend and I will post my results.

Fishing still slow. Caught a few keepers on Eagle Lake this morning, but bites were far and few between.

Yes I was also out Sunday morning with my partner just messing around in the south unit.. What a shame, Seen a 1.5-2lb largie under a pallet stack come rushing out to my minnow and then just stopped like someone yelled @ him to get back in here.. Then as we were looking in the hole on our knees a DNR rides by and says pray harder cuz theres no fish in here anymore! Thats just great! That was our que to pack it up, was out for about 2-3 hours with not a single tap! Waste of time, Coulda slept in for the first time since december ;)

Fished four lakes in So. Mazonia. Very slow still. Managed to catch (and release) one LM Bass about 14", several small bluegills, and kept a couple of really nice 'gills which went home to the frying pan. Missed a couple other fish. Fished with minnows and waxies. No bites on minows - no crappies found. Saw a guy with a very nice perch and a huge 'gill.

Nothing was going on at Mazonia on Clear Lake today, 5 keepers between 4 guys and they were all caught by 1 guy. Lots of lookers. Ice was between 6 and 8' depends where you were at. May go back early next week after the weather settles.

Plan on going to Mazonia North in the AM. Looking for any report as to ice conditions since the warm spell and rain from this past weekend. Any info at all would help. Thanks in advance.

Tried Mazonia a couple Saturday's ago on its opening weekend and did not have any luck. The target species were pike and panfish but had no luck on Carp Lake which has both in it. The vast majority of people were on Clear Lake and heard that some panfish were being caught there.

The Fish of the Week in Wednesday's Chicago Sun Times was a 8 lb. 7oz. largemouth bass. It looked the part based on the picture. She was caught March 25, 2008 on a jig and pig on the Mazonia lakes. I did not think bass got that big this far north. Very cool. Cool
