Dave i know about how a certain species of panfish can decimate another. Our lake seems to have WAY to many small blue gill...most sem to be in the 4 inch slot. I do remember about 15 years ago the yellow bass population EXPLODED on wonder seems every cast landed a 8 inch yellow... since than never caught another!! I didn't take it personal i taught my 3 kids catch and release and they now know a picture is better than killing a good (spawner?) if you do ice fish the chain if its no bother maybe we could hook up (lol) sometime or maybe show you wonder lake im in the stage of buying ice fishing gear again.... sold all my stuff years ago?? Power auger, tent, poles and tackle for only 100$ didnt know my youngest boy would take into ice fishing shame on me!

No I'm not a resident of Wonder, actually I've never fished it. I fish the Fox Chain a lot though. Something similar happened back in the 90's when the yellow bass population exploded on the Chain. They literally took over and their biomass at one point was over 80% of all fish in the chain. Because of this we saw a huge decline in crappies, white bass, bluegills etc. It lasted for several years and then one year the yellow bass population suffered a huge die off which is natural when one species becomes so dominant. I've also heard of large crappie populations cannibalizing their own young which seals their doom for future generations. I'm not saying this is what's happening on Wonder but it could be something similar. My comment about releasing fish was nothing personal...nothing wrong with keeping some fish to eat. Nice photo of your daughter with a dandy bass...way to go!

Wallidave. I do RELIGIOUSLY practice catch and release...kept 2 of the crappies for dinner along with most of the gills. Will never keep bass or any other game fish for consumption. This lake has a few surprises in it,caught numerous walleyes and my personal record bass had to go around 7 to 8 lbs ALL i can honestly say were released! I dont know if your into ice fishing? I just got back into it after many years.... are you a resident of wonder?  Heres a pic of my daughter with a nice fish! (Taught her right!)

Crappies are a cyclical fish. Bad spawns, heavy fishing pressure and competition from other species will cut their numbers back. They will be back, might take a few years but they will return. When their numbers are low it would help to release the ones you do catch or at least limit your harvest.

been fishing wonder lake for over 30 years and been wondering where all the crappies have gone... used to catch 20 to 30 plus fish especially at night under a light.. Dont know if the crappies are fished out, had a PHENOMENAL time this summer with largemouth bass average was 2 to 3 lbs. thanks to the dredging i think!! The few crappies i caught recently were SLABS!

Any advice for this lake? I've lived here for 10 years and have only been on it probably 10 times with minimal luck. I'm looking for bass and just can't seem to find them like I thought I would. I know they're there. Any help would be appreciated. I fish the docks primarily when I go out, am I missing something? Thanks all.

I had not been out much, too warm. Went out yesterday (10am to 2pm) caught a lot of small blue gills. The 4 biggest were around 7.5 inches. Fished by the dam in 8.5 fow, with worms and waxworms near the bottom.

MOON PHASE
New Moon

Looks like the timing should be good for the carp kill classic. Even with the overcast sky's and rain they're still going crazy
